NBG Chapel Reopens Following Post-Typhoon Renovations

NAVAL BASE GUAM (Feb. 2, 2024) - U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) Commanding Officer Capt. John Frye, Chaplain Daniel Swartz, and contractors cut the ceremonial ribbon to kick off the re-opening of the NBG Chapel onboard NBG, Feb. 2.
The chapel underwent a $1.5 million repair following significant damage from Typhoon Mawar, which swept through the island on May 23. Repairs included the replacement of copper roof-tiling, flooring, and exterior repainting.
Mawar tore portions of the chapel’s roof off, causing heavy water intrusion and water damage. In the aftermath of the typhoon the chapel’s Ministry Team took swift action to hold religious services outdoors for several weeks, until generators could power the chapel classrooms.
Joint Region Marianas Force Chaplain Capt. Steven Roberts provided the invocation and prayed for the blessing of all those involved in the chapel’s restoration, the chapel’s leadership and ministry team, church patrons, and the community.
Since January 2024, the chapel has been used by more than 2,800 patrons, for more than 100 different events.
