NAVAL BASE GUAM (March 10, 2025) – Orote Commissary customers now have more lunch options, as the store recently introduced several new hot meals to go. According to Orote Commissary Officer Victor Galloway, some of the new meals served daily include pot roast, smoked baby back ribs, sliced prime rib, tamales, spaghetti, meat loaf, various soups and chowders.
“The deli and bakery have for many years offered (different) forms of hot foods,” Galloway said. “Over the last year, the efforts have increased to offer patrons a meal that is hot and ready.”
Prior to the change, hot foods were limited to mainly rotisserie chicken and chicken wings, alongside fresh sushi rolls and poke bowls.
The hot, bento-style meals are part of a Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) initiative, which was steadily rolled out six months ago. Galloway said the Orote Commissary team is currently working on adding items, advertising, and the potential for having a daily set menu, as the program is still in its inception. While there is currently no set daily menu, patrons who want to know what is being served for the day can call the Orote Deli and Bakery at 671-333-4231.
“Hot foods become available as early as 9 a.m. until they are sold out, and the team does a great job to ensure that the product does not run out prior to 6 p.m.,” Galloway said.
A hot foods table is posted in the front of the store for those who are looking for a quick and hearty meal and where majority of the hot food options are located. A second hot food table is located near the bakery and frozen dessert section.
“Prices for the meals vary from $6.99 to $22.99 for a full rack of baby back ribs,” Galloway said. “A majority of meals can be purchased for less than $10.”
In the future, the commissary hopes to offer additional catering options to include mac and cheese, lasagna, and chicken wing trays.
Carmen Cruz, who has worked with the Orote Commissary for the past 18 years, said some crowd favorites include the ribs, pot roast, and sliced prime rib.
“I really enjoy the meatloaf and the Italian Wedding Soup,” said Cruz who works as part of the commissary’s Deli Department. “With the popularity of these meals, I notice we find ourselves bringing out more fresh meals as they sell throughout the day it’s really exciting to be a part of.”
The commissary will continue to gauge the success of the program, and make changes as necessary.
“The hot meals have been a huge success with a 10 percent increase over the last year’s sales and account for nearly 13 percent of deli and bakery sales,” Galloway said.
In addition to hot meals, the commissary deli has spent the past several years serving fresh and made-to-order sandwiches. The sandwiches, along with meats and cheeses, can be ordered online by visiting https://cpfd.revelup.com/weborder or placing your order in-store.
Orote Commissary is open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information about the store and its services, call 671-339-5177.
