NAVAL BASE GUAM (May 31, 2024) - U.S. Naval Base Guam Commanding Officer Capt. John Frye and NBG Public Works Officer Cmdr. Nick Leinweber, MWR Director Donna Spaddy, staff from NBG MWR, and construction contractors, cut the ceremonial ribbon to mark the official opening of the Charles King Fitness Center Track and Field, May 31.

The $4.9 million contract included the removal of the damaged track, repair of the aggregate base course and drainage, new asphalt pavement, a new synthetic surfacing system, and a new electronic wireless scoreboard.

The event was also opened with ceremonial races with children from NBG Child Youth Programs.

The track closed in January 2021, after a safety inspection deemed the track unsafe due to numerous large bubbles on the running surface that posed tripping hazards.
The track and field can now be utilized again for Command PT, obstacle course challenge events, track meets, running clubs, relay races, football and soccer games, among other things. Pets, bikes, strollers, scooters, skateboards, or roller blades are not allowed, as they may cause damage to the track surface.
